The early morning downpour had cleared by the time the field of 74 assembled for the time honoured Newgrove Benchtops Eliminator at the South Barwon Reserve but the strong, blustery, west wind made running very testing.. All entrants were required to complete both the 4 km and 3 km events with the best performed twenty qualifying for the 2 km final. Mary Harrison had a substantial lead with 400 metres of the final to go but Chris Cahill emerged from the chasing pack to race to a convincing victory with Harrison holding on for second ahead of Glenn Wrest. Cahill’s only previous victory had been in last season’s sealed series. Club stalwart, Graeme Watkins, was recognised for reaching the prestigious milestone of 500 club runs.
