Mediate First 5000m Sealed Handicap

Mediate First 5000m Sealed Handicap winners (L-R) Backmarkers: Andrew McGrillen, Middlemarkers: Glenn Wrest, Frontmarkers: Frank Engelsman and New/Returning: Jane Card.

The season’s biggest field of 116, including 21 invitation runners, lined up for the Mediate First 5 km sealed handicap along the Waurn Ponds Creek shared pathway. Conditions were ideal with little breeze and consequently the pace was on from the start. It was Daryl Burns who was able to hold off Michael Minney to win by 20 metres with Luke Haines a further 40 metres behind. Kate Bramley again streeted her rivals, being the fastest female by almost two minutes.

When handicappers, Dan and Andrew, applied the hidden handicaps, the Middlemarkers’ and Frontmarkers’ divisions were won by Glenn Wrest and Frank Engelsman respectively who had trained hard for the recent Ocean Road Marathon. Andrew McGrillen won his second Backmarkers’ section sash and Jane Card was the Newcomers’ winner. Julie Elkin was recognised for reaching the 400 run milestone after 25 seasons with the club.
