SteelSeries GG is a broad desktop suite rather than a lightweight equalizer, and its Sonar audio mixer is limited to Windows. The app also adds virtual audio devices to Windows, so its extensive controls come with extra software components and setup.
For PC audio, Sonar separates game, chat, media, aux, and microphone into channels with independent volume and equalizer settings. Users can route applications to those channels by dragging them into place, then adjust the balance between game and chat with ChatMix. The mixer works with any headset and microphone; SteelSeries hardware is not required.
When configuring sound for different games or communication apps, SteelSeries GG can apply more than 200 professional and community presets for game, chat, and media audio, as well as reduce microphone noise and add spatial audio for headsets.
Audio setup and control
Sonar creates separate virtual devices for its audio channels, giving users a central place to manage sources that would otherwise need individual volume and EQ adjustments. A practical setup begins by choosing the game, chat, media, and microphone devices in Sonar’s setup wizard. Applications such as Discord or Spotify can then be assigned to the intended channels through drag-and-drop routing.
Each channel has its own equalizer and volume control, so a user can tune game audio without changing the microphone level or media playback. Presets provide ready-made starting points for supported uses, while manual channel controls allow further adjustments. The microphone tools are intended to reduce noise and optimize input, which can help make voice communication clearer without requiring a SteelSeries microphone.
Other modules in the suite
SteelSeries GG also includes Engine, Moments, and 3D Aim Trainer. Engine is used to configure SteelSeries mice, keyboards, and headsets, including device lighting, macros, and firmware updates. These hardware controls are relevant to SteelSeries peripherals, while Sonar, Moments, and the aim trainer can be used without SteelSeries gear.
Moments captures gameplay clips for sharing, adding a separate recording function to the same application as the audio tools. The additional modules make GG useful for more than sound configuration, but they also contribute to its all-in-one character. Users who do not need a particular module can disable it in the GG Services settings, including Moments.
Platform and practical fit
SteelSeries GG is freeware for Windows 10 and Windows 11. macOS support has limited features and does not include Sonar, which is a Windows-only PC audio application. Sonar does not run on Xbox or PlayStation, so its virtual mixing and routing features are intended for Windows computers.
The program suits PC gamers who want separate game and chat levels, per-channel EQ, audio presets, and microphone noise reduction in one interface. It is less suited to someone seeking only a simple system-wide equalizer, because GG combines audio with device configuration, clip capture, and other tools. During installation and setup, the key practical consideration is whether those extra modules and virtual audio devices are useful for the intended workflow.
